Knitter's Review
February 11, 2010
a squirrel for Cirilia

You've mastered the knit and the purl stitch. You've played with yarn-overs, you've even turned a few cables. What next?

How about a little brioche? And I'm not talking about the baked variety.

Brioche stitch is known by many names, including Shaker rib, English rib, Fisherman's rib, and Prime rib. It involves working slipped stitches and yarn-overs to create a double thickness of fabric with raised lines of ribbing. Nancy Marchant explores the many creative possibilities for this stitch in her new book, Knitting Brioche.

The Return of Mason-Dixon Knitting
This week marks the release of Mason-Dixon Knitting in paperback. If you've wondered what Ann and Kay have been up to since their book first came out, you'll find details in their brilliant spoof of the 1975 Maysles' documentary and the 2009 Emmy Award-winning "Grey Gardens"—or, as they call it, "Grey Garments."

This Weekend in Washington
The Madrona Fiber Arts Winter Retreat celebrates its 11th anniversary this weekend from Thursday to Sunday at the Hotel Murano in Tacoma, Washington. While registration for workshops is now closed, you can still pick up on the Madrona vibe by attending evening events led by Wild Fibers Magazine publisher Linda Cortright and Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. Don't miss the marketplace, which is open and free to the public all four days of the retreat.

As always, I thank you for your readership and your support.

Happy knitting, and I'll see you in the Forums!
