Piper up close

Until quite recently, Texas had a thriving mohair industry.

The end of government subsidies, combined with severe drought and low-cost international competition, have made that industry a fraction of what it once was. But, as Quince & Company demonstrates with its mohair/Merino blend Piper—all sourced from Texas—it ain't over until it's over.

Shall we swatch?

Coming Up
This weekend, head to the Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Boonville, California, for the 17th annual California Wool and Fiber Festival. Further south, four shops open their doors for the San Luis Obispo County Yarn Crawl spanning San Luis Obispo, Cambria, Pismo Beach, and Atascadero. Just one week later, shops in the Boston area roll out their red carpet for the Greater Boston Yarn Crawl. And, in Paris, Arkansas, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee headlines at this year's Arkansas Fiber Arts Extravaganza. These and hundreds more can be found on our calendar of upcoming events.

An Icelandic Saga
In 2012, I traveled to Iceland to wrangle sheep, fondle wool, and eat far too much butter. While there, I visited a farm dedicated to preserving Iceland's native goats, whose undercoats are as fine as cashmere. At the time, they were struggling to be economically viable. This year, news came that the Haafell Goat Farm was under threat of foreclosure. Their flock—the largest such flock in the world—was destined for the slaughterhouse

But wait! An ambitious Indiegogo campaign succeeded in raising funds to keep the farm intact. In the few days remaining, a new goal has been set: to raise enough funds to get Johanna her own milking room and cheese-making equipment. With such in-house capacity, her path toward economic viability would be nearly ensured. Can you help?
