This is Thanksgiving week in the United States. It's a time for family get-togethers and large meals that, courtesy of leftovers, can go on for days and days.

Salute to Knitting

Behind the greeting cards and pumpkin pies, however, is a heightened sense of gratitude for the goodness in our lives. And what could merit more gratitude than the gift of knitting?

This simple activity gives us physical and emotional solace, satisfies our need for creative expression, and results in beautiful, useful items.

For some people, knitting has had an especially profound impact. This week, I reprint one reader's awe-inspiring story, which I received via email several weeks ago.
