Some call it "clown barf." You know what I'm talking about—the hand-dyed yarns that look like a fully decorated Christmas tree that went through a shredder. Some of these super-colorful skeins work up into magic, others into a muddled mess.

But increasing numbers of small-scale boutique hand-dyers are exploring the concept of the semisolid—a yarn that's technically one color but created from layer upon layer of subtle gradation, shadow, and nuance. I love these yarns, especially for socks.

This week I asked Jane Cochran to design us a pattern expressly for semisolids and, in particular, for one extra special yarn. Jane's Hedgerow Socks pattern and my list of other favorite semisolid yarns are this week's focus.

KR Retreat Update
After opening up registration for our 2007 Knitter's Review Retreat last week, we booked the event solid within just a few days. To those who sent in applications, I'm still sorting through the forms, double-checking the timestamps, and removing the duplicates, but I hope to send out attendance notification soon. If you'd like to be put on our waiting list, all the details are here. Don't be discouraged by the notion of a waiting list, either—last year we had several last-minute openings.
